Boothbay scored early and often May 15 in defeating Nokomis/MCI in schoolgirl lacrosse. Boothbay scored three goals in the contest’s first eight minutes in staking a 3-1 lead en route to an 11-4 victory at Sherman Field.

Boothbay’s Chloe Arsenault scored the first of her four goals 3:55 into the game, followed by Cortney Meader who scored her first of four goals four minutes later. Nokomis/MCI (0-9) cut the lead to 2-1, but goals by Reagan Cola, who scored three, and Arsenault gave Boothbay a 5-1 lead midway through the first half.

Despite Boothbay’s third win in five games, Cola thought her team could’ve won by a larger score. Cola has done a bit of scoreboard watching this season. Her team defeated Class A Sanford on Saturday, and in an earlier contest lost a close contest to the combined Winthrop/Maranacook squad playing a man down the entire contest. Nokomis/MCI is the midst of its first year as a varsity sport. Winthrop/Maranacook easily defeated Nokomis/MCI, 15-3 earlier this season.

“I really thought we should’ve won by more,” Cola said. “But it was a fun game. We slowed the pace down in the second half because we don’t have any subs which I think impacted our scoring.”

Managing the game’s pace is a challenge coach Bill Goldenberg faces each contest. Boothbay has a total of 12 players which means all 12 play the whole game. “I think we got tired in the second half which isn’t surprising. We got off to a fast start because we have a lot of team speed which showed in how quickly we scored in the first half, but we try to slow down the pace in the second half because we don’t have the depth, especially with midfielders, which impacts our defense.”

Boothbay hosts Maranacook/Winthrop (5-2) at 4 p.m. Friday, May 17.
