The Boothbay lacrosse team scored early and often May 4 against Lawrence High School at Sherman Field, and then, they scored some more. Boothbay crushed Lawrence of Fairfield, 18-3, in Class B North girls lacrosse action.

The match was originally scheduled for May 5 in Fairfield, but an official shortage resulted in a date change which ultimately led to changing the location. Boothbay clad in their navy blue road uniforms on their home field scored three times in the match’s first six minutes. Midfielder Lincoln Hamblett scored the first of her four goals in the match’s opening 17 seconds. Hamblett and attacker Jackie McLoon led the scoring attack with four goals each.

Other Seahawk multiple goal scorers were attacker Hannah Cola, 3; midfielder Helen Hamblett, 2; midfielder Kate Friant, 2; and defender Sydney Meader, 2. Attacker Evy Case had one goal.

Boothbay, with a 206 enrollment, is the third smallest school competing in Maine high school lacrosse. The Seahawks seemingly had no problem with the larger Lawrence team with 674 students. Both teams are first-year varsity programs having played the previous two as a club sport.

This year, Boothbay has posted a 2-1 record. Helen Hamblett attributed her team’s domination over Lawrence to playing as a cohesive unit.

“We have a strong offense. We communicate with each other, and play with an intense desire to win,” she said.

Two of Lawrence’s three goals were scored by sophomore midfielder Cassandra Poli. She described Boothbay as having too much offense and defense for her team to handle.

“Their goalie is very good. They communicate very well on defense, and move the ball extremely well on offense. They are just a very good team,” Poli said.

Lawrence is 0-3.

Boothbay’s next game is at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10 against Lincoln Academy in Boothbay Harbor.
