If you’ve never gone “Into the Woods” - via the musical, not your backyard or nearest land trust preserve, you have an opportunity coming up in November. The Boothbay Region High School (BRHS) Arts Department will present “Into the Woods Jr.” Thursday, Nov. 15 through Saturday, Nov. 17.

It’s been about 16 years since theater arts maven Mary Miller, stage and music director of the production, took local audience members on a journey through a world of characters a la the brothers Grimm. That show was the full show, not the Jr. version. So, why do it again? A big smile lights up her face as she replies, “It’s an awesome show! Fun costumes and songs.”

Miller says the Jr. version includes all the songs from the first half of the full show. The cast of 17, some portraying two characters, began rehearsing in mid-September three nights a week.

And now ... the magical “Into the Woods Jr.”: Cinderella and Cinderella’s Mom: Grace Campbell, Emery Lorrain (8th grade students); Baker’s Wife: Lilley Harris; Little Red: Emerson Harris; Baker: Will Perkins; Wolf & Cinderella’s Prince: Brady Harmon; Stepmother: Nataleigh Blackman; Stepsister Lucinda: Brianna Field; Stepsister Florinda: Journey Bennett; Rapunzel and Granny: Maren Whitney; Rapunzel’s Prince: Larissa Greenleaf; Mysterious Man: Colin Campbell; Jack: Della Hahn; Jack’s Mom: Isabel Harkins; Narrator: Jamie Major; Witch: Kaitlin Tuttle; and Milky White: Blythe Miller. Backstage: Tim Norton. Stage and musical director: Mary Miller. Costumes and makeup: Paulette Carter. Set direction: Caitlin Shepherd.

This Tony Award-winning musical, book by James Lapine, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, regardless of what version you see, is absolutely enchanting. The show run is one hour, 15 minutes - no intermission.

“Once upon a time, In a far-off kingdom, There lay a small village ... At the edge of the woods.”

The curtain goes up on that far-off kingdom in the BRHS auditorium (236 Townsend Ave.) at 7 p.m. all three dates with an additional 3 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Nov. 17.  Tickets are available in the BRHS office. Call 633-2421 for more information on tickets.
