BRHS has three McDonald’s senior all-stars

Boothbay Region High School basketball will be well-represented at the upcoming 39th annual Maine McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star Basketball Games.

The Maine Association of Basketball Coaches (MABC) held three press conferences in Portland, Augusta and Bangor Feb. 20 to announce the All-Star Players, All-Star Coaches, All-Star Academic Team, Foul-Shooter Winners, and the Semi-Finalists for Mr. and Miss Maine Basketball.

Seahawk senior Faith Blethen was chosen as one of 10 semifinalists for 2019 Miss Maine Basketball, will participate on the girls’ South Class C/D all-star team, earned a spot on the 12-member All-State Academic Team, and is one of four finalists in the state free throw shooting contest during All-Star weekend, March 8-9 at Husson University in Bangor.

Blethen’s teammate, senior Ashley Abbott, was also named to the girls’ South Class C/D all-star team.

Seahawk coach Brian Blethen was named girls’ Class C South Coach of the Year and will be one of the coaches of the South Class C/D all-star team along with girls’ Class D South Coach of the Year Heidi Deery of Rangeley.

Lastly, Seahawk senior Steve Reny was named to the boys’ South Class C/D all-star team.

The 2019 annual Maine McDonald's All-Star High School Senior Basketball Games will take place Saturday, March 9, at Newman Gymnasium on the campus of Husson University in Bangor. The game-day program will feature head-to-head competition between top players in the state in North vs. South basketball action.

The boys’ C/D all-star game will start at 1 p.m. followed by the girls’ C/D all-star game at 2:30.

The All-Star teams were selected based upon ballot returns in a statewide high school basketball coaches’ vote conducted by the MABC in January.

Blethen and Abbott will play alongside the following players on the South C/D all-star squad: Alexa Varnum of Dirigo, Alexandra Lessard of Forest Hills, Franceska Halloran of Hebron Academy, Kaeti Butterfield and Abby Ferland of Monmouth Academy, Summer Ross of Mt. Abram, Brooke Egan of Rangeley, Hannah Moholland of Richmond, and Layne Audet and Katie Perkins of Winthrop.

Reny will compete on the South C/D all-star team with: Jeremy St. Germain of Dirigo, Brandon Gilboe and Jakob Rivas of Forest Hills, Ashtyn Abbott and Alex Bryon of Hall-Dale, Jacob Meader of Madison, Connor Davies of Monmouth, Ilija Ivkovic of Temple, and Jared McLaughlin and Cam Wood of Winthrop.

All-Star Players and All-Star Coaches, members of the All-State Academic Teams, Regional Foul Shooting Champions, Maine McDonald’s Spirit of the Game Award Recipients, MABC Contributor Award and Media Award Honorees, as well as the Mr. and Miss Basketball finalists will be honored at an awards banquet on March 8 at the Anah Shrine Hall in Bangor. The three Mr. and Miss Maine Basketball finalists will be announced after the regional championship games.

All-Star game tickets may be purchased at Husson University on March 9 and are good for all four games and game day events. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students, and free for children age 5 and under.
