Bring it to a vote

Dear Editor:

It is time to thank the Planning Board for its unrelenting work on Boothbay Harbor’s east side proposals. They have conducted meetings and given us all the information we need to make a decision. One article needs to be presented to the Board of Selectmen for one vote by the residents. Do not “hack it up,” do not delay this process any longer.

We have three philanthropic members of our community who have stepped up, shown an interest in the workings and the future of Boothbay Harbor. Two seem to be able to purchase, repair, reconstruct and add to the tax rolls. No comments, no opposition. Another meets opposition at every turn – why is this? The past is being preserved, the future is just that. Change is necessary to move forward. Granted, many that are part of the opposition have moved here, want the region to stay the same. What happens in 15-20 years when they are gone and our opportunity to improve, beautify, expand and create a vital, working community is gone?

In the 61 years that I have lived here, there have been many changes, some questionable at the time. Consolidation of the schools, building of the YMCA, saving the Opera House, the land trust organization, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and even the roundabout. All were met with great discussion and now are landmarks of our progress.

The east side project will continue to provide a working waterfront, green space, harbor viewing and reconstruction of existing building (that are taller now than they should be). It is time for the entire harbor to be in compliance regarding rules and regulations. It is time to join together and think what is best for “our town.” Our driveway from Route 1 can be one to a vibrant, beautiful and inviting community that is welcoming to tourists. We need the tourist dollars.

We have a vibrant lobstering community – they are protected and will always be.

We need to increase our tax income. Our infrastructure, our schools need these monies.

Damariscotta, Camden, Rockland, Belfast and other coastal communities have realized that the future is only going to happen with change. They are thriving. We have this opportunity. Bring it to a vote.
