Considering the position you are running for, what do you feel are the three most pressing issues?

The three most pressing issues are finding a way to attract young families to the area, keeping the tax rate (mil rate) stable and balancing our past, present and future to ensure Boothbay continues to be a great place to live and work. Our school enrollment is declining quickly. In order to attract young families, we need to ensure that they have good paying jobs and housing that they can afford (both ownership as well as rentals). Our youth is moving away for better opportunities as well as affordable living conditions. We need to continue to work on finding a way to bring infrastructure (i.e. high speed internet) to look at the possibility that some may be able to telecommute or to have the ability to serve their business needs. An increase in housing as well as future economic development will help to stabilize the mil rate and help to offset rising costs as we move forward. We need to continue to work with our neighboring communities to keep costs down. Collaboration helps everyone. We all have the same types of needs so it doesn’t make sense not to work together to save and this helps to stabilize costs and thus the mil rate.

Any other thoughts on why you are running or what you can bring to the office?

I’ve enjoyed serving as one of your Selectmen. It’s been my pleasure to serve the town and its residents. I’m always willing to listen to both sides of an issue before making a decision. I hope that you have found me to be fair in working towards reaching a decision on any issue that comes before me. I’m always available to discuss a concern or an idea that you may have. I’m a lifetime resident of Boothbay. My wife Nancy and I live on the farm that has been in my family for generations. I’ve seen many changes to Boothbay and the Boothbay region growing up here. Some changes I’ve liked, some I’ve disliked. I’ll continue to use a common sense approach to work through changes as we move forward into the future as a town. I hope that I’ve earned your trust, your respect and your vote as I seek another term as one of your Selectmen.
