“Bridge on the River Kwai” is the third in the Classic Film Series showing at Harbor Theater on Thursday, Jan. 17 and Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. It won seven Academy Awards and has been included on both the American and British Film Institutes’ lists of best films ever made.

This is the 1957 epic war film directed by David Lean (Lawrence of Arabia) and starring Alec Guinness, William Holden and Jack Hawkins, based on the historical building of the Burma Railroad in 1942-43.  After settling his differences with a Japanese P.O.W. camp commander, a British Colonel (Guinness) co-operates to oversee his men's construction of a railway bridge for their captors, while oblivious to a plan by the Allies to destroy it.

A free bag of popcorn and water will be provided before the 2 p.m. show and complimentary wine and cheese will be served afterwards.

“Bridge on the River Kwai” (2 hr. 41 minutes) is rated R.  Tickets are $10 at the door (no discounts). Harbor Theater is located at 185 Townsend Ave., Boothbay Harbor.

“Few Second World War films are as enduring as this multi-Oscar-winning examination of the stiff upper lip from director David Lean.” Radio Times
