CTL: A professional development destination

The Center for Teaching and Learning, a K-8 demonstration school in Edgecomb, has hosted a group of teacher-interns for the past week from all over the country and the world. For 28 years, teachers have visited Edgecomb a week at a time to observe methods developed by CTL’s faculty and adapt them to their own classrooms and schools. The past week’s interns included teachers from schools in California, New Jersey, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington and Australia.

Although not a charter school, CTL accomplishes what charter schools were conceived to do—innovate, and then pass along successful methods to teachers in public school classrooms.  Faculty members experiment thoughtfully, write books and give presentations, are featured in educational DVD’s about CTL’s programs, and demonstrate their methods in-person to the visiting teachers.

More than 600 teachers from 45 states, Washington, D.C., Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, England, India, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan and Uganda have participated.  Only classroom teachers may apply to become interns; the fee they pay helps underwrite tuition assistance for CTL students.
