It seems basketball season just isn’t long enough for Boothbay Region coach Dan Hallinan, as this year, he will add spring and fall to his winter coaching schedule. Halinan will coach the Maine Renegades sixth and seventh grade boys basketball team in addition to his Boothbay Region junior varsity duties.

The Maine Renegades team was founded by Maine and New England Basketball Hall of Famer Rick Simonds who coached Saint Joseph College in Standish for 23 years. Simonds won 11 conference championships, qualified for six National Association Intercollegiate Athletics tournament bids, and received 15 conference coach of year awards. Simonds founded the Maine Renegades in 2014. Hallinan was recommended by a player’s father as a candidate for the sixth and seventh grade coaching job.

“My name was passed on to Rick (Simonds) last winter as a candidate,” Hallinan said. “One of my goals is becoming a (high school) varsity coach and eventually coaching at the college level. This is a huge step for me working with someone like Rick who is a highly regarded coach.”

As a Renegade coach, Hallinan described his role as providing quality coaching instruction on an individual and team basis with an emphasis on fundamental skill development. Hallinan is a 2009 Boothbay Region High School graduate who played for I.J. Pinkham. Hallinan began on the BRHS staff in 2012. He has coached freshmen and junior varsity boys basketball in Boothbay Harbor.
