It’s January again and that means that Jack and Barbara Brennan host the first DEYC winter gathering of the new year. Their lovely, welcoming home has provided the January setting for the past three years. Even with an unpredictable storm on the horizon, more than 40 hearty Down East Yacht Clubbers were anxious to make their way to Quarry Road in Edgecomb on this fateful Saturday evening.

After all, it’s winter in Maine; it is what we DEYC boaters do to substitute for warm weather maritime activities! We get together monthly with fellow members at a member’s home and share winter stories, spring plans, familiar conversation, great food and favorite drinks.

As always, consummate host and hostess, Jack and Barbara, greeted everyone with gracious generosity. Their tables were brimming with assorted dishes prepared by Barbara and chock full of delicacies provided by member guests. DEYClubbers always supply their own favorite beverages, but that didn’t prevent Jack from stocking a very generous selection that would make any tavern keeper proud.

Before several announcements and reminders of important upcoming matters, Jack welcomed visitors with another of his favorite quotes from his prominent Irish collections and was rewarded with a hearty thank you.

Members Alice and Dick Thompson introduced prospective members, Chuck and Kelley Race. Members Troy and Sandy Hersom presented potential members Michael and Sara DePasa. Pete Yesmentes offered his thoughts and sought ideas for the monthly Day Tripper events during the summer. Day Trippers have become a preferred activity among members, especially those with smaller cruising vessels. Administrative Assistant Jane Mulholland highlighted a list of reminders including deadlines and updating roster profiles.

Many small and large energized groups developed while enjoying lively conversation. It was difficult to leave the friendly, warm surroundings and several guests lingered before venturing into the cold and imminent storm. We look forward to our next gathering on Feb. 23 at the home of John and Sharon Ryan in Boothbay.
