Earthquake felt in Wiscasset, Boothbay

    Area residents reported feeling a brief shaking on Wednesday, Jan. 17, around 7 p.m. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a minor earthquake, a little more than three miles, or five kilometers, southeast of Richmond, at about 6:45 p.m. No damage or injuries were reported.

    The earthquake occurred at a depth of 1.43 miles, or 2.3 kilometers, below the surface.  The quake occurred in a region known as the Richmond Quadrangle, which is associated with several minor fault lines, including the Eastern River fault. According to USGS, nearly 400 people reported feeling the quake.
