On the playground, they call him Ismael, but in the classroom he’s known as a spelling champion. Sixth grader Ismael Martinez defeated 11 other Edgecomb Eddy School students Feb. 1 in winning the school’s annual spelling bee. Martinez captured the title when he successfully spelled “indelible” and “salutation” after fifth grader Lei Bercasio misspelled “percussion” and fourth grader Bella Morton misspelled “supposedly.”

The Edgecomb Eddy Spelling Bee had 12 contestants. One boy and one girl represented each of the grades from 1 to 6. The contestants were Jillian Murray and Cameron Murray, grade one; Olive Tomko and Stella Chapman, grade two; Charley Carleton and Isaac Fanslau, grade three; Isabella Morton and Alli Guild, grade four; Lei Bercasio and Ross Gaffney, grade five and Abigail Clark and Ismael Martinez, grade six.

Clark and Martinez will compete in the Lincoln County Spelling Bee on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
