Enforce the comprehensive plan

Mon, 09/17/2018 - 7:00pm

Dear Editor:

When Pat and I were first married, we camped the Maine coast in a pup tent. We were broke, but loved the coastal lifestyle and dreamed of one day owning a home here. When our son was born and our salaries increased, we spent annual vacations at the Newagen Inn. When Brian graduated from college, Pat and I vacationed a couple of times at the Cuckholds Lighthouse. Still we never forgot the dream of one day owning a home here.

In 2015, that 40-year dream became a reality when we bought a great little house on Atlantic Avenue. We weren't originally attracted to fancy hotels and restaurants, but instead it was people who still had a little dirt under their fingernails. This town is simply more authentic than some of the more “Tony” towns to our north and south.

This is why I ask our town planning and selectman’s boards to please enforce the existing Comprehensive Plan and not allow developers to put more emphasis on high-end resorts than our working waterfront and affordable lodging. Boothbay Harbor has always welcomed families of every economic level, and ours is just one example.
