Full circle with Wrap-A-Smile

Terry Hodskins Fullam and fellow Rotarians from Wells Rotary Club brought quilts and a generous donation for Wrap-A-Smile to the recent meeting of the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club. Wrap-A-Smile is a charity quilting project managed by Dr. Ann Demeranville, member of Boothbay Harbor Rotary. When Terry first started this project of providing comfort quilts for children and babies undergoing cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries by Rotary-related volunteer medical teams, the Boothbay Harbor club was an early supporter. The project now belongs to Rotary District 7780 but is managed from Boothbay Harbor, and the Wells Rotarians came to return the financial support. As Terry jokingly said, “Here's your money back!” The cost of shipping the quilts to the medical teams is the primary expense of this project. The Wells club’s donation will generously cover the costs of getting 200 quilts to children on the day they receive their life-changing surgeries.

During the last 18 years, 25,616 comfort quilts have been distributed around the world. As a visual, this number of quilts would cover seven football fields, or if placed end-to-end would stretch for 20 miles. And of course these quilted gifts are made by generous quilters who will probably never meet the recipient of their gift.

Wrap-A-Smile enjoys the ongoing support of the Boothbay Region Community Center and local quilting group Kwiltz4Kids. The Boothbay Harbor Rotary clubhouse hosts Quiltathons twice a year and is the site of packing parties when the quilts are vacuum-packed for shipment. There is ongoing need for help with all phases of this project: sewing, quilting, labeling, and packing. Anyone interested in helping or learning more can contact Ann at quilts7780@gmail.com
