Joseph Henry “Joe” Claffey, formerly of Pittston, Maine, died peacefully at Sussman House in Rockport, Maine on July 19, 2018 after a lengthy illness. He was 87.

Joe was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts on April 19, 1931 to Michael and Jennie Claffey. He attended Boston Latin School and went on to earn degrees at Northeastern University, Boston College, and Clarkson University. He served as a mathematics professor at Northeastern University and the dean of mathematics at Massasoit Community College in Brockton, Massachusetts. Teaching was his passion and he held fond memories of his many colleagues and students. Joe served in the U.S. Navy and often reminisced about his time in the service and his Mediterranean travels.

In 1969, Joe married Ann Riggs Killen and together they made their home in Marshfield, Massachusetts and raised her two sons. They enjoyed summers at their cottage in Jonesport Maine and eventually decided to make Maine their permanent home. They purchased and operated Mike’s Log Cabin General Store and Diner in Wiscasset from 1995-2006, closing when Joe’s health began to decline. He and Ann settled into son Barton’s home in Pittston where they enjoyed small town life and frequent visits with family and friends. Joe spent his last few years at the Lucette Home in Thomaston where he regaled staff and fellow boarders with tall tales from his life.

Joe was an avid audiophile and patron of the arts. He was active at Round Top Center of the Arts in Damariscotta and served as music director there in 1996. He enjoyed making the rounds at local libraries and shops and was always ready to cook up his signature corned beef dinner.

Joe will be greatly missed by his wife, Ann; stepsons, Barton Killen of Pittston and Garrett Killen and wife Brenda of Sidney; grandson, Andrew Killen of Gardiner; and his caregivers and friends at the Lucette Home in Thomaston.

He was predeceased by his parents and an infant daughter, Megan.
