Juniper and McKown Point Column: Chowder contest and tennis

Tue, 08/14/2018 - 8:30am

Mid-August, the time when we stop asking “how long are you here this summer?” and instead ask “when do you return home?” A wistful time when the Yacht Club cannon booms before, not after, 8 pm. Time to ask “where did the summer go?” To keep the summer spirit alive, the JPVIS Board has added a new event this year: The first JPVIS Chowder Cook-Off! It’s this Saturday night, Aug. 18, starting at 5 p.m. at the Community House. $15 per person allows you to sample the chowders, vote for your favorite, and then sit down and enjoy all the chowders along with some awesome bread from an artisanal bakery in Portland. In addition to the “people’s choice” award, chowders will also be judged by on-Point culinary experts. Who’ll go home with the first ever JPVIS chef hats? Already burner space has been claimed by Bob Stuart, Lee Corbin, Dave and Becky Taylor and, we hear, a few Texans. It all sounds delicious. BYOB and you’ve got Saturday night entertainment and dinner rolled into one.

Last Saturday morning’s Tennis Exhibition and Pancake Breakfast brought out folks from all corners. The early morning cooks made enough pancakes and waffles for 72 people and only a few remained. Dave and Susan claimed the Golden Buoy in the Exhibition play with an 8-3 win over Blake Wayman and Jeff Davis. Thanks to everyone for putting this event together every year.

The 2018 JPVIS Tennis Tournament results are in: Girls Singles winner is Micaela Brown (Phoebe Lewis, finalist); Boys Singles winner is Buck Lewis (Clay Kynor, finalist); Junior Doubles was won by Buck Lewis and Jackson Emery (Clay Kynor and Sebastian Rubel, finalists); Mens Singles winner is Brook Hazelton (Jack Fleming, finalist); Mens Doubles winners are Jack Fleming and Charlie Beattie (Todd Cheema and Devin Pai, finalists); Ladies Singles winner is Lizzie Lewis (Sheila Floury, finalist); Mixed Doubles was won by Lizzie Lewis and Matt Zimmer (Becky Taylor and George Morrison, finalists); and the Mens Senior Singles was won by Tom Lynch (Jeff Kowalski, finalist). Congratulations!

Next week will be the last to sharpen up your tennis skills with Dave and Susan as clinics will end Aug. 24.

Please get your news to me by this Sunday, either by phone or email. Thanks.
