Lobster-eating contest: Crackin’ good fun!

Thu, 06/28/2018 - 1:00pm

The Windjammer Days lobster-eating contest on Wednesday, June 27 drew 13 contestants to compete for the $100 prize – and braggin’ rights! The event featured entertaining commentary by emcee Doug Gimbel.  The contest judges and co-organizers Cap’n Rusty Court and Chris Gleason also had a hand in keeping things lively for the audience.

The contest got off to a false start, however, when the contestants began breaking apart their first lobsters not realizing Cap’n Court was explaining  that when he said 3-2-1 start, the contest would begin. So, the countdown was redone – and the contestants got down to business!

Local sea captain (and pirate for a day) Sewall Maddocks took first place taking only two minutes and 21 seconds to devour the tails, claws and knuckles of two lobsters — and chose to give the $100 prize back to the Friends of Windjammer Days! Congrats to Sewall and the other 12 competitors: Steve Figueroa, Ernie Estrella, Vinnie Julian, Allen Brookersmith, Jason Baraner, Adam Dickinson, Meredith Albridth, Chetria Sherwood, Colleen Reed, Chris “Bull” Switzer, Wyatt Luke and Gage Greaney.

Remaining lobsters were auctioned off at bargain prices.
