Local teacher honored for educational service in New Jersey

Boothbay Region Elementary School teacher Lenore Imhof will be honored as the Alumna of the Year at the Bloomfield Educational Foundation (BEF) annual gala April 24 in Belleville, New Jersey. Before she came to the Boothbay region, Imhof had a strong history with the Bloomfield school district both graduating from the system and teaching there for almost three decades.

“I am extremely humbled and honored to receive the Bloomfield Educational Foundation Bloomfield Alumna of the year,” she said. “This incredible organization founded 25 years ago by individuals who truly cared about the well-being of all students in Bloomfield have provided countless financial contributions to graduating seniors and to our Bloomfield schools.” 

According to its website, BEF is a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring students in the Bloomfield school district have opportunities to succeed; The organization provide funds for teaching programs and initiatives to give students access to resources they may not otherwise have. 

Imhof graduated Bloomfield High School in 1984. In a press release from BEF, she thanked all her amazing Bloomfield educators for enriching her life with their wisdom, wit and love of learning and inspiring her to achieve her professional and personal goals.

Imhof went on to earn an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and a law degree from Seton Hall University. Throughout her career, she also earned advanced degrees in teaching and educational administration from Montclaire State College and Caldwell University. In 1995, she returned to Bloomfield High as a teacher while attending Seton Hall University’s evening law program. She melded her interests at the high school and created a law education program and a mock trial team. She taught there for 27 years.  

She now lives in Boothbay Harbor with husband Kirk Mikkelsen and their two dogs Hover and Moxie. When not teaching fourth grade, Imhof follows another passion: swimming. An avid athlete, she competed in NCAA Division 1 for Georgetown, started the Bloomfield High swim team and has coached swimming for 40 years. She currently coaches swimming at Boothbay Region YMCA.
