Music at All Saints by-the-Sea Southport

Mon, 08/06/2018 - 11:30am

It’s not every day that we have an opportunity here on the coast of Maine to listen to an organist and recitalist who has played at St. Paul’s Cathedral and Notre Dame de Paris.

Henry Lowe will be playing the organ at All Saints by-the-Sea, Southport at both the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. services on Sunday, Aug. 12. During his lifelong career as church musician, Lowe has served parishes in Baltimore, New York City, Hamilton, Massachusetts, and Cincinnati, Ohio. In 2016 he retired after 32 years from the Church of the Redeemer, Baltimore where he led choirs of children and adults in weekly rehearsals and liturgies. During that time he enriched a strong musical tradition with monthly concerts of choral, organ and instrumental music. His recital career and sabbaticals have taken him to many parts of the United States, England, Holland, Germany and France. On Sunday he will be playing Ralph Vaughan Williams Chorale Prelude on “Rhoseymedre” and a chorale prelude by Bach In Thee is Gladness.

Lowe is the most recent of a number of excellent organists who have been invited to play All Saints new digital organ. Later in the summer (Aug. 26 and Sept. 2), Timothy Harrell will be at the organ bench. Currently organist and choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Church in Solebury, Pennsylvania and formerly university organist at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Harrell has a B.S. in organ performance having studied with Dr. Charles Vogan. He earned a master of music degree with dual majors in organ performance and church music at Westminster Choir College, Princeton, where he studied with Joan Lippincott. On Sunday, Aug. 26, Harrell will also play for All Saints Joint Evensong service with St. Columba’s Church. The service will take place at All Saints at 5 p.m.
