One Design Association holds annual meeting, presents awards

The Boothbay Harbor One Design Association members had their closing dinner and annual meeting Saturday evening, Sept. 8. The members meet because of their love of sailing and to promote the preservation and restoration of the classic racing sloops in our area. Over the past two years, the BHODA raised the money to build the Junior Program portion of the BHYC new Sailing and Education Building.

Don Snyder received the Alden Reed Memorial Trophy “in recognition of the preservation of the Boothbay Harbor One Design class” for all the work he has done as treasurer of the BHODA while the new building was being built.

The Geerd Henley Award, which is “presented in recognition of outstanding contribution to the BHODA,” was given to Allan Miller who rebuilt the 81-year-old One Design prototype, Loon, first built in 1937, the year before the first One Design sloop was built. Loon is back and sailing again with the BHODA fleet.

The annual BHODA plaque was awarded to Rob Whitten for winning the Annual One Design Race this year. Rob raced his One Design, Swan, which he had rebuilt by David Nutt over the past winter and which had not been in the water for 26 years. Either Rob has not lost his sailing skills in 26 years or David Nutt did an awfully good job rebuilding Swan.
