Our natural economy

Dear Editor:

Just thought about our local economy. Quite recently I was at the Lincoln Festival Chorus’ production of “Requiem,” which was beautiful. On the back cover of the program is an ad for Hodgdon’s (200 years of boat building excellence, with three locations and waterfront facilities, including slips, moorings and other marine amenities). Other boat builders have great services and provisions, which are our beginnings; we’re all about boats, fishing and the sea. What’s wrong with an economy based upon our natural beginnings?

Just look at the amount of boats in the harbors. Few fishing piers remain and less public space for fishing. We need more commercial fishing space and boating, not more motels or “grand illusions.” Are we allowing a natural economy to slip into oblivion? We need a working waterfront that could or should be expanded. Think about it.
