Event has passed

Blending jazz and classical styles, Grammy winning pianist Paul Sullivan returns to Boothbay Harbor with his holiday concert,  “Christmas in Maine” on Thursday, Dec. 7 as part of 2017 Festival of Lights Celebration. Sullivan will also be bringing some special guests for the show!

"I'll be joined by Myles Jordan, cellist for the DaPonte String Quartet, and by flutist Liz Downing of the Bangor Symphony,” said Sullivan. “I am also welcoming special guest artist, singer Rose Upton, a rising star on the musical theater scene. Originally from Orland, Maine, Rose has just completed her conservatory training and moved to New York City, where she is already making a name for herself. You’ll understand why when you hear her. She sings like an angel."

Sullivan is a member of the Paul Winter Consort and spent the early years of his career in New York City, conducting on Broadway and performing at Bradley’s, and other jazz clubs. He has played with a wide variety of  masters from Benny Goodman to Tommy Flanagan, as well as Red Mitchell, Lou Donaldson, George Mraz, Gerry Hemingway, Marc Helias, Gene Bertoncini, Eugene Friesen, Jamie Haddad, Luciana Sousa, Cafe, Sarah Lee Guthrie, Noel Stookey, Don McLean, Pheeroan AkLaff, Eddie Daniels, Richard Stoltzman, Nana Vasconcelos, Cyro Baptista, Ivan Lins, Glen Velez and many other luminaries.

Sullivan is also a regular composer for Pilobolus Dance Theater (for over 20 years) and has released dozens of albums over his multi-decade career. He currently lives and composes in Maine, but continues to travel throughout the U.S. and internationally.

Sullivan’s “Christmas in Maine” concert is a celebration of his beloved album of the same name. The evening will include selections from the album as well as other inspired music, in Sullivan’s distinctive style.

Tickets are currently on sale through the Opera House box office at 86 Townsend Avenue or by calling 633-5159. Advance tickets are $20/adults and $10/youth. Full price tickets and the day of the concert are $25 for all. The doors for seating open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7. Refreshments and holiday baked goods will be available for sale during the evening.

Paul Sullivan’s concert is one of many holiday events planned this season at the Opera House as part of the Festival of Lights. For additional holiday events at the Opera House visit

Once decked out for the season, few venues in Maine can match the Opera House’s holiday look. Dozens of trees, thousands of lights, and greenery aplenty festoon the stage and balcony and lobby area. Set designer Kevin Kiley does not hold back during the season and begins his work decorating for the Festival of Trees in early December and then adds more each week in preparation for the Paul Sullivan concert, student performances, the Dough Ball, the annual Gingerbread Spectacular and then culminating with the community carol sing.
