Dear Editor:

I would like to publicly thank the teachers at the Monhegan school for allowing us shelter during the extreme storm Sept. 6. Special thanks to the student who noticed the two of us tucked under their doorway and asked that we be invited in. We gratefully sat the storm out in their coatroom.

This kindness seems a ripe metaphor for today’s interpersonal climate: a young person who is learning that compassion and empathy are what link us gives me hope for our future.
