Seahawks outlast Raiders, 39-30
It was a battle of unbeaten teams and something had to give. And someone had to take. Doing the taking were the Boothbay Region Seahawks, as they held off a fourth quarter rally by the visiting Oak Hill Raiders (10-1) to improve to 12-0 with a 39-30 win at BRHS Wednesday night.
Boothbay held a 15-point lead going into the fourth quarter, 31-16, as the Raiders continued having trouble getting any offense going against the Seahawks’ match-up defense and the twin towers, 6’2” Glory Blethen and 6’1” Faith Blethen, protecting the paint.
But the Raiders didn’t quit and stepped up their own defense, rushing two players at Faith Blethen whenever she tried to make a move to the basket and taking the ball away from players out on the perimeter. Oak Hill went on to score nine unanswered points to start the fourth quarter to cut the score to six, 31-25, with just over five minutes to play.
At that point, Boothbay held off any more runs by the Raiders to secure the win.
Faith Blethen led all scorers with 19 points. Glory Blethen added seven, Kylie Brown five, Chloe Arsenault four, Maddie Faulkingham three and Josey Smith one.
Leading scorers for Oak Hill were Sara Moring with 10, Sadie Waterman with seven and Desirae Dumais with six.
Boothbay’s next game is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 18 in Jay against Spruce Mountain (7-5).
