Community invited to celebration

If you were turning 175 years old and were still vibrant, joyful, and healthy, wouldn’t you celebrate for a year? The congregation at Newcastle’s Second Congregational Church, U.C.C certainly plans to, with monthly events featuring the music, outreach, story, and people of the historic brick church on the river.

The 175th Anniversary Celebration kicks off during the 10 a.m.  service on Sept. 30, titled, “Time Capsule Sunday.” That morning will mark the first step in creating a time capsule, to be sealed and left for future generations to discover. Everyone in the community is invited to participate, as the church gathers historical documents, congregational symbols, photographs, and visionary elements that help tell the church’s story.

“Whether your family worshipped here a century ago or you enjoy the glorious concerts offered by local musical groups or you come for the warm community meals, you are part of that story,” explains Pastor Charlene Corbett. “If you have something to possibly be added to the time capsule, bring it! This will be a wonderful, lively service that you won't want to miss as we recall our foundational roots while shaking the rafters in joy!”

Each monthly event will be publicized well in advance, and schedules are available in the church office or by calling 563-3079.
