Southport Column: Snow, remembering Nora and Kathy and more

Mon, 03/25/2024 - 1:00pm

If you are reading this in time, the Southport Democrats are meeting at the Southport Memorial Library on Tuesday, March 26 at 11 a.m. Among other business they will be choosing delegates to the state convention to be held in Bangor May 31-June 1. Three delegates can be elected as well as one alternate. If that quota is not filled, the vacancies will go into a ‘pot’ and can be filled by folks in other towns. All are invited to attend this meeting.

Also if you are reading in time March 26 at 6 p.m. is the rescheduled date for the celebration of life of Nora Brewer. Look for a lovely picture and obituary for Nora Brewer elsewhere in this paper. With many Southport family members, she lived most of her adult life on the island. The rescheduling is due to Saturday’s storm.

Last Saturday’s snow, sleet, and rain storm kept many people home not only all day Saturday, but even Sunday morning as travel was difficult. Our driveway was a sheet of hardened snow, which fortunately began to melt a bit when temperatures rose above freezing. We did not lose power, but perhaps others did. In town the power was out at Hannaford and St. Andrews Village until about 4 p.m. Thus far March is leaving us as a lion.

Kathy Barter is remembered in many ways, but especially by a plaque on the wall to the right of the entrance to the children’s room at the Southport Memorial Library, where she spent much time reading and playing games with the children. When you are next in the library, take a moment to read the plaque and remember Kathy.

Southporter Morgan Mitchell is having a liquidation sale of her ocean and wing design clothing at her store, 1088 Wiscasset Road in Boothbay, on the right, just before the roundabout if you are coming from the south. From 4 until 6 p.m. on Friday, March 29, you can look through the remaining articles, including T-shirts and onesies, enjoy some sweet treats and fun music. Morgan is eager to find homes for these remaining articles, which have been her signature attire for some time. Now she is ready to go in a new direction. If you live on the peninsula and do not have one of these fun designs, now is the time.

An item for your calendar is a special Southport Town Meeting on May 3 at 10 a.m. The agenda is to elect a member of the water district board. Nell Tharpe, who is a current member, is running for reelection. Polls will be open for your vote from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Let’s hope we have pleasant weather next Sunday for the celebration of Easter. At the Southport Methodist Church the Easter service will be at the normal service time of 9 a.m. No sunrise service this year due to the unavailability of the previous locations.
