Southport library hosts annual Souper Bowl lunch Jan. 21

It’s time once again for the annual Souper Bowl at the Southport Town Hall, Monday, Jan. 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sponsored by the Southport Memorial Library Aides, the luncheon is open to the public and accepting free will donations to support our literacy activities.

Join your friends and neighbors for this convivial mid-winter gathering on Martin Luther King Day. Southport’s “souper” cooks will dish up more than 20 varieties of soups and chilies, accompanied by home made corn bread and rolls as well as dessert and coffee. Seconds and thirds are encouraged and leftover soups will be available for a small donation to take home at the end of the luncheon. Disposable containers will be available or bring your own pint-size containers.

Past diners have often asked for recipes for the soups, breads and desserts served at the Souper Bowl luncheon. The Library Aides listened, and collected many of those recipes into their new cookbook. “Southport Soup” is a collection of recipes, many of them from offerings at past Souper Bowls, on sale at this year’s luncheon for only $7. Pick one up, or buy two or three as gifts for friends. All proceeds go towards improving the non-fiction section in the children’s room at Southport Memorial Library.

The Southport Town Hall is located on Route 27 two miles from the Southport bridge. Plenty of parking is available. For more information, call the library at 633-2741.
