Sprucewold Column: Impressions of Sprucewold

Tue, 07/31/2018 - 5:30pm

When asked for thoughts on Sprucewold while enjoying a great lunch outing to Coveside Restaurant via Khetanis’ ark of a boat, participants respond below:

Sprucewold is amazing because you can’t go anywhere without running into someone you know! – Avery Khetani

Sprucewold is such a great place because of how close the community is; you can walk down the road get a friendly wave from anyone you pass. – Halle Hutchinson

No bad days in Maine! I love how every day so many things happen in our community and there’s always a really big story to share at the end of the day. It’s great to see old friends year after year. – Sarah Khetani

The Thorps brought Luey and Cody to the Mutt Scrub. Penelope volunteered washing dogs. Elizabeth T. ran into Kent classmates Leanne (Salty Dog owner) and friend Caroline. – Elizabeth Thorp

I love being in Maine and going on boat rides with family and friends! I enjoy being here so much! – Penelope Thorp

When asked about his experience volunteering at Aquarium, Alex Khetani says he likes meeting new people and working with the animals. Alex is a wealth of great info about lots of the species found at Boothbay’s great aquarium, and I recommend a visit.

Coming from Los Angeles, we love love love the fog. Cannot get enough of it and fires in the fireplace. Even on Day 5. – Rebecca Hutchinson

I love the woods so I want to see it. Let’s keep trimming all those branches and undergrowth so we can see from the roads into the woods, and beyond. – Almus Thorp

I love walking up to get my newspaper from the mailboxes! I love making a fire on a cool July day and enjoying a book. – Charlie Hutchinson

My favorite thing about Maine is that I can walk everywhere. I can walk to town and all of my friends’ houses. I love Sprucewold because everybody knows and is friends with each other. – Kimball Khetani

In Maine I love that I can see my family anywhere I go, which is so different than my life at home. I usually have to take a six-hour plane ride to visit anyone, but at Sprucewold I can see my family in a matter of minutes. – Sam Hutchinson

Sprucewold is a family – I love the potlucks and events and all the impromptu get togethers. – Lucy Thorp

Isabelle Thorp is sharing the Beach Attendant job this year with sister Lucy. Lots of seaweed raking. Dad likes to tell them “there’s no app for that!” Just good ole manual labor.

***Upcoming events: Sprucewold Annual Meeting on Aug. 4, 10 a.m., Linekin Heights Green; Potluck Supper, Aug. 11, Linekin Heights Green, 5-7 p.m. Signs are on the mailboxes with details.

Also, there are still a few openings left for the Firewise Cabin Assessment by the Maine Forest Service on Aug. 7. There are also some slots remaining for our Brush Chipping Day on Aug. 13. Please contact Ralph Kimball to reserve spots in either program. The cabin assessment program was very well received by those who participated last year. Since the Brush Chipping program was started, we have removed and chipped 35 tons of brush from around Sprucewold cabins.
