“Impressionism in France, Italy, and America” will open at the Wiscasset Bay Gallery in Wiscasset on Tuesday, Aug. 8 with a reception from 5-7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.

Of particular note in the exhibition is an oil by Hungarian born artist Lazlo Medgyes (b. 1892) of colorful beach umbrellas and sunbathers along the Cote d’Azur. Medgyes came to Paris in the 1920’s and was involved in opera and theater designs for many important productions. He also traveled throughout France painting in the Loire Valley and the southern coast. Contemporaries of Medgyes exhibiting are Lucien Genin (1894-1953) who worked in gouache and captured the parks and backstreets of Montmarte, and Jean Salabet (b. 1900) who preferred to paint the open boulevards of Paris with flower vendors and busy street life.

American impressionists works on view include a beautifully painted gem of a sailboat leaving harbor by Max Kuehne (1880-1968), three fishermen climbing the hill with Monhegan harbor seen in the background by Edmund Ward (1892-1991), and Reynolds Beal’s (1866-1951) playful crayon drawing of the Christy Brothers Circus in Salem in 1928.

Among the Italian impressionist paintings on display is a richly painted oil of Venice in broken brushstrokes by Cipriano Mannucci (1882-1970), a pair of ethereal nudes in a landscape by Guglielmo Innocenti (1871-1961), and a sunlit Italian village by Alberto Zampieri (1903-1992). The show also features etchings, watercolors and oils by Polly Nordell (American, 1876-1958), Paul Cezanne (French, 1839-1906), Edouard Manet (French, 1832-1883), Andrew Winter (American, 1893-1958) and Constantin Westchiloff (American/Russian, 1877-1945).
