Midcoast Humane welcomed 55 cats and kittens from West Virginia through the shelter’s transport and rescue program, Welcome ME Home.

The transport was a collaboration with a rescue organization in Belington, West Virginia, called Friends of Barbour County. This is Midcoast Humane’s fourth feline rescue with the group.

Among the rescued cats that arrived on April 17 are two nursing queens (mother cats) and their babies, and five litters of kittens that were old enough to travel without their moms. Twenty adult cats aged 6 months to 12 years also made the journey to Midcoast Humane.

“When we have the space to assist other organizations in need, to save more lives, we do,” said Trendy Stanchfield, executive director of Midcoast Humane.

In 2018, Midcoast Humane saved 951 animals through its transport and rescue program, Welcome ME Home.

According to Kate Cochrane, Intake Coordinator for Midcoast Humane, Friends of Barbour County is a small shelter that struggles to find adoptive homes for all of the animals in their care.

“They are a small rescue that has a very hard time adopting out all of their cats, and with more coming in every day, space is a real issue for them. Some of their cats have been in their care for a few years with no adoption interest.”

The kittens are in foster care and will go up for adoption after they are old enough for spay/neuter surgeries. Some of the adult cats have already been adopted.
